Forensic Mental Health Program
The Forensic Mental Health Program at The NY Mental Health Group provides specialized psychological care for individuals involved in the legal or criminal justice system. Through structured, evidence‑based interventions, we address mental health needs while supporting rehabilitation, reducing recidivism, and ensuring compliance with court‑mandated requirements.
Who We Help:
Individuals on pretrial, probation, or parole
Court‑mandated clients (mental health, sex offender, or domestic violence treatment)
Youth and adults in juvenile or criminal proceedings
Defendants found Incompetent to Stand Trial (IST)
Referrals from courts, attorneys, correctional facilities, or social services
Program Objectives:
Stabilize psychiatric symptoms and reduce risk behaviors
Restore legal competency and promote accountability
Provide trauma‑informed, culturally competent care
Facilitate safe reentry with coordinated supports
Collaborate closely with courts and justice system partners
Our Process:
Every case begins with a Forensic Evaluation—a comprehensive psychological assessment that may include interviews, record reviews, specialized testing (e.g., Static‑99R, SAPROF‑SO, Hare/PCL‑R), and detailed written reports for legal use. These evaluations are objective and shared with the requesting legal entities.
Treatment Components:
Individual & Group Therapy: CBT for criminogenic thinking, impulse control, anger management, trauma‑focused interventions, and competency restoration
Skills Development: Life skills, coping strategies, and conflict resolution
Psychiatric Care: Diagnostic assessments, medication management, and education on treatment adherence
Legal Coordination: Regular court reports, expert testimony, and collaboration with probation/parole
Reentry Planning: Housing, benefits navigation, medication continuity, and community linkage
Program Outcomes:
Restored competency, reduced hospitalizations and incarceration, improved mental health and functioning, successful reintegration, and lower recidivism—delivered with professionalism, ethical oversight, and clear communication about confidentiality limits.
